Psychometric testing

Discover your strengths and challenges

Psychometric testing (or psychometric assessment) is the use of standardised tests to measure an individual’s cognitive potential, strengths and difficulties. It can also be used to measure academic skills, behavioural concerns and daily functioning.

Assessment can be used to explore, support or rule out a diagnosis such as ADHD or autism spectrum disorder.

What does psychometric testing screen for?

Psychometric testing helps us identify possible barriers to learning, personal functioning or social adjustment, neurodevelopmental disorders and areas of potential.

  • Intellectual disability

  • Intellectual giftedness

  • Learning difficulties

  • Autism

  • ADHD

  • Depression and anxiety

  • Oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder

Why is this information useful?

The results of a psychometric test are useful to identify areas where you need extra support and areas where you have strengths and potential. We can use the information to plan interventions and adjustments to better support your needs.

Testing results can also improve your ability to apply for funding, accommodations and special support.

What tests do we offer?

We currently offer testing for ADHD and autism spectrum disorder. Our testing is thorough and holistic and will only be recommended if we believe it is necessary.

What is the testing process?

  • Upon booking an assessment, intake appointment questionnaires may be sent for parent, teacher and/or self-ratings, to get a better understanding of current symptoms and functioning. Please fill these out and get them back to us before your appointment.

  • In the intake interview, we will cover background information, review relevant documentation and discuss the reason for referral. During this interview, the psychologist will decide on the most appropriate test battery to administer. In the case of school-aged children, this interview is with parents or guardians only.

  • For optimal results, tests are administered in the morning to eliminate mental fatigue and optimise concentration. A three-hour time slot will be booked for the assessment.

The actual duration of the assessment will depend on various factors including which tests are being administered, the individual working speed, age, attention span and progression.

We can take breaks as required; please ensure you send a drink and snack with your child. For child assessments, only children need to participate while parents can relax in our waiting area. Under specific circumstances, parts of the assessment might be done with the parents in the room, although this can cause distraction and is not recommended.

  • Results will be discussed, recommendations will be made and interventions planned. A written report is provided. In the case of school-aged children, this will be another parent session.
